As in many parts of France, food is an integral part of local life and tradition. Naturally the food of the region was one of the reasons we chose to make this incredible part of France our home. The gastronomy of the area is second to none. Duck is one of its most popular dishes, especially foie gras and you will be spoilt for choice at the number of top quality restaurants available within a few minutes drive. The majority of restaurants specialise in local cuisine and the chef will probably know from exactly which farm his produce has come. Everything will be served with delicious local gascon wine. Why not finish off your Gascon gastronomic feast with a glass of Armagnac. Naturally we can recommend places to visit where you can taste and buy fro local producers.
The myriad of local vineyards produce wonderful red, white and rose wines, many of which you will only find in the Gers, together with Armagnac (which many people here find superior to Cognac - don't ever offer a 'Gersois' a glass of cognac, it is tantamount to treason!), Floc, a local aperitif made with a basis of Armagnac and either red or white wine, and Pousse Rapiére, another aperitif with a delicious taste of oranges which you mix with champagne or a good sparkling wine.
Most towns and villages have their own weekly markets in which you can buy delicious fresh produce of every variety and flavour. Fruit and vegetables grown in people's gardens, delicious bread pastries and gateaux, local wines, cheeses you will find nowhere else in France, meat duck and poultry products including of course the famous Gascon Fois Gras, olives and nuts - the list goes on! In fact there is very little you cannot buy from a French market! After filling your basket with delicious provisions, take time to sit outside a local café sipping a delicious coffee and watching the rest of the world bustle by. We have several markets all within a short drive, including Castelneau Magnoac, Boulogne-sur-Gesse, Masseube, Seissan, Mirande and Trie-sur-Baise. Auch of course boasts a huge market twice a week and during the summer even has a night market.
